VRIJ Glas

Zaandam, Netherlands

May 2012

I spent two weeks in May, 2012 in Zaandam, just north of Amsterdam, at VRIJ Glas, a private studio owned by Durk Valkema and Anna Carlgren- two well known Netherlands-based glass artists. I organised this residency with the intent of developing further some sculptural art work and functional design ware.

The studio had a small pot furnace and two work stations and I had the opportunity to meet some other artists that work from this studio for their own practice. It was great to see the different techniques of glassblowing used by these artists and the style of work they make.

Through my time at VRIJ Glas I was able to develop ideas and prototypes that eventuated into a body of work Metamorphosi that was exhibited at JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design in Adelaide.

This time for experimentation and development was great to experiment with the material and explore the sculptural potential.  I thank Arts SA for this great creative opportunity.
